Assassin’s Creed Unity is the first game of the franchise that will be exclusive for current gen consoles – that means, only for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, and mainly because of the powerful hardware. The game is scheduled to launch today but Ubisoft has already released a companion app. If you’re thinking of getting the game, you’ll want the app as well.

The new game will take you to Paris this time, at the period of the French Revolution. The gameplay of the famous RPG – if all the sneak peeks and exclusive hands-on videos are correct – will be pretty much familiar to Assassin’s Creed veterans. Radically – though not unexpectedly – the game now introduces multiplayer gameplay, to vary the game mechanics and extend the replay value a bit.

The companion app will not be of much use without the game. Ubisoft says that the app will give players a handy 3D map of Paris, allowing gamers to pick out routes and paths through the city. There’s also a database of tips and tricks for the game, and a heat map – of how other players went through specific stages.

But if you’re a purist who doesn’t want assistance for the game, there is still value in getting the app as it unlocks exclusive missions if you solve the puzzles it gives you. If you’ve been a fan of the game all these years, something tells us that Assassin’s Creed Unity will be groundbreaking in a lot of ways. We hope you have a PS4 or Xbox One to play it in though.
