Ting has announced that its GSM SIM card service is now in open beta for anyone to sign up and try out. All users need to participate is a Ting GSM SIM card, which sells for $9 and an unlocked mobile phone. Invitations to participate are no longer required.

Ting has GSM and CDMA coverage maps to allows you to find out if you would be covered in your area. The company also points out that GSM and CDMA devices can be together in a single account and share minutes for talk and data allowance.

Ting says that it is turning to the open beta after sending out thousands of invitations to the closed beta. It used the feedback received to tweak the service and get it ready for a larger trial. Another item the company has worked on is the ability for users to move service or active numbers from CDMA to GSM devices.

The service isn’t perfect at this point. International roaming isn’t working so any one going out of North America will be unable to connect. International long distance calling could also be an issue. While this is a beta, Ting says the issues are few and the service works.
