The Smart Boy started out as an April Fool’s joke, and we all had our nostalgic little laughs at it. But then Hyperkin, the company behind the “joke” saw how big the reaction was to their little concept that they actually decided to make one. And it might not be long until you can buy this for your Android smartphone.

Hyperkin wowed everyone at E3 in Los Angeles with a working Alpha Build of the Smart Boy, and when we say “working”, it really does what it says it will do. The initial concept art showed an iPhone, but Hyperkin’s E3 build was using a Samsung device, and they did confirm that their product will be compatible with Android smartphones.

The build had all the Game Boy buttons, the same corrugated grip design, plus a legit slot where it accepts game cartridges. We’re thinking they probably used a mini-USB port connection on the alpha build. A challenge will be building for multiple USB port standards, as the USB Type C is becoming more and more popular.

But the Hyperkin representatives at E3 say they are up to the challenge. They said to expect a retail version of the Smart Boy around December of this year. As we near the end of the year, we will probably get an idea on specs, phone compatibility and pricing.
