If you’ve been following us for a while now – or if you own an unlocked Sony Xperia device – you will know that Sony approaches the issue of AOSP-based (Android Open Source Project) custom ROMs on their devices differently. Where others would be in lock-down mode, Sony gives users the ability (and responsibility) to unlock their bootloaders and flash AOSP ROMs on their devices. You will be happy to know that Sony has made available the Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based AOSP binaries for almost all Xperia devices, including the brand spanking new Xperia Z5.

The Sony Xperia Z5 is very much unlike its more recent predecessor – the Xperia Z3+/Z4 – which was hounded by overheating issues. This new flagship is suave and brings Sony back into the conversation for most beautiful Android flagship phone around. Sony is now opening the smartphone up to the tweakers and after-market dudes – if you have an Xperia Z5 whose bootloader can be unlocked, then you can start flashing Marshmallow AOSP into the phone.

What is more surprising is that almost all Xperia devices are getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP binaries. As far as we can tell, the list includes the Xperia T3, the T2 Ultra, Xperia M2, Xperia E3, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, the Z Ultra, the Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2, the Z2 Tablet, the Xperia Z2 Compact, the Xperia Z3, the Z3 Tablet, the Xperia Z3 Compact, the Xperia Z4, the Xperia Z3+, the Xperia Z4 Tablet, and finally, the Xperia Z5 Compact and the aforementioned Xperia Z5.

This is a testament to the robustness of the hardware of Xperia devices, that smartphones and tablets almost 4 or 5 generations down will still be able to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Granted that they might not be all as snappy and smooth, but they will run the software. That is just amazing. Check out the source link for the download locations for these binaries.
