Sony is now putting out to market the Sony SmartBand 2 – successor to its original fitness wearable that launched middle of 2014. The SmartBand 2 is intentionally marketed as an accessory to a Sony Xperia brand smartphone, but the app that goes with it will easily be installable on any capable Android phone. Let’s see what’s inside this new fitness wearable.

The Sony SmartBand 2 is designed to monitor your fitness and health data, and as such its core sensors are designed to promote this function primarily. For this, the SmartBand 2 has an accelerometer and heart rate sensor that work together to monitor pulse and heart rate data. The wearable also automatically tracks fitness activities such as running, walking, and other workouts, and you can monitor progress with the accompanying “Lifelog” app.

It also provides smart features for your entertainment and notification needs – specific taps on the SmartBand 2 will allow you to play, skip, or pause your smartphone’s music. The wearable also provides vibration notification for emails, calls, and messages – and even has pulsing RGB LEDs if you want something more visual. Lastly, the SmartBand 2 provides proximity notification, making sure that you don’t lose track of where your phone is. The wearable will vibrate to alert you when you are more than 10 meters away from your smartphone. Pretty nifty, eh?

The SmartBand 2 is designed with a silicone outer skin which gives a lot to its wearability. It charges through USB and is IP68-certified water resistant. A full charge for the fitness band will take one hour and will last for around 2 days. The SmartBand 2 will be in worldwide markets starting September, and will sell for around USD$132.00.
