Snapchat made its name in the social media world by introducing ephemeral messages or pictures and messages that will not last forever (in fact, just a few seconds only). But it looks like the more other apps are trying to imitate them to capture this market segment, Snapchat is then trying to move away from what made them popular in the first place. A new feature called Memories is further evidence that they’re trying to be more than just that sexting/face swapping/sticker effects app.

From the feature’s name itself, you kind of understand what it’s trying to do. Memories lets you save your snaps (pics or videos, in case you didn’t know) and stories so they will disappear later on. After you take a picture or video, just tap on the save button and it will be added to your Memories. To access them, just swipe up from your camera to open it, then type the keyword of what you’re looking for, and all the snaps connected to that tag will come up so you can just swipe through them. You can also post some Snaps from your Memories onto your current Story or send them to your friends. It will be differentiated from your current Snaps because it has a frame around it so your friends know it’s from your past.

If you have a habit of showing your Snapchat to your friends and loved ones while you’re together, there might be some stuff that you actually don’t want them to see and so you’re hovering over their shoulder to make sure they don’t see it. But now, you can actually save your Snaps and Stories to the My Eyes Only section, which can only be opened with a password. So those, uhm, delicate photos and videos can be stuffed there. Just don’t forget your password though.

The new features will be selectively rolled out over the next month so it might be some time before it reaches you. Until then, be careful with those private snaps. Wink wink.
