HTC joining the virtual reality game was a surprise to everyone at the Mobile World Congress last month. Taiwanese tech giant HTC partnered with Valve to bring the Vive VR headset perhaps to compete with Oculus, Samsung, and Google. We learned just before March ended that it’s heading out free to developers. The time has come and HTC Vive Developer Edition is now ready for signups from willing developers.
The HTC Vive Developer Edition is free but but only for selected developers. Signup is now open so if you’re a developer and you want to check the virtual gaming headset, go on and send your name. You might be selected to receive the HTC Vive Development Kit for free. This is just the developer edition and it won’t be ready for purchase yet.
This virtual reality headset offers a 360° room-scale VR experience. HTC is looking to add more VR content for the headset so developers are needed to create more content for the SteamVR platform. The HTC Vive will be the first to use SteamVR so it’s an exciting feat for both companies. Supplies might be limited though so developers better cross their fingers to be chosen. We don’t know how HTC and Valve would choose the lucky future VR content creators.
Just like Oculus, HTC and Valve won’t sell the device just yet but the commercial version is scheduled for a late 2015 release. Before the year ends, the HTC Vive is expected to have fully joined the VR gaming arena.
We managed to get our hands on the HTC Vive VR Headset at the MWC 2015. Watch the video below:
