I’ve personally been waiting for this for a while now, as the market has been inundated with Samsung tablets that have generally been for the low-end and lower midrange market. That translates to low specs, barely HD displays, and mediocrity all around (but cheap and affordable though). Samsung just unveiled today the new Galaxy Tab S2 (running out of code numbers there, eh?) and it looks like we’re going to see a robust upper midrange tablet for a change.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 will come in 2 variants, differentiated by their 8-inch and 9.7-inch displays. Both will sport an octa-core processor with big.LITTLE architecture to power their QXGA (2048×1536) displays. The processor cores run at 4×1.9Ghx and 4×1.3Ghz. That will be ably supported by 3GB RAM and a choice of whether you want 32 or 64GB of internal storage. A microSD expansion port allows additional storage of up to 128GB.
As we said, this tablet will be no slouch. It will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop and will have all the connectivity options to the full – yes, you get 4G LTE on these new babies. There’s an 8MP/2.1MP camera combo for when you need a quick snap or selfie and a touch-enabled fingerprint sensor for authentication on the home key. From the looks of it, we will be getting very slim tablets from Samsung this time, at 5.6mm, although not at the rumored 5.4mm measurements.
The variants will vary in battery capacity, the bigger 9.7-inch one will have a 5,870mAh battery, while the smaller 8-inch one will have a 4,000mAh battery. All in all, probably enough to get you through the day of normal use. Samsung says the tablets will be available in global markets starting August this year, but there is no information yet on the pricing.
