Phone manufacturers and mobile carriers must regularly send updates to smartphones. That’s the idea but unfortunately, not all names in the mobile industry keep their promises. We only know of Google’s Android team and BlackBerry who update their devices but more are still to be done. We were hopeful that Samsung would release the said updates and security patches as promised but there’s been some kind of a delay.
HTC was right when it said that monthly security updates are unrealistic but we all know that it’s a problem that can still be fixed. And because Samsung has been failing to release the needed updates, a consumer protection group in The Netherlands has filed a lawsuit against the South Korean company. They’re demanding that Samsung releases updates for all Android phones.
We’re not sure if just for the phones sold in The Netherlands but according to the group, about 82% of Samsung devices in the country have not received the latest Android update and security fixes. This move is important because about 80% of the smartphones sold and used in the country are from Samsung. Other OEMs are also guilty but Samsung has captured the biggest part of the market.
Samsung and other companies better work on this issue. It’s not only The Netherlands that need the software updates of at least two years but also in other EU countries. Why, the EU warranty policy also covers other products sold in the region and at least two years.
The lawsuit was filed which means a decision must be made soon. We’re curious as to how the court will look at the case. We’re not sure how Samsung will solve the problem but something concrete must be done now.
