If rumors are correct, then we may be seeing Samsung’s NX lenses – this professional-grade lens technology – to its smartphones. A lot of manufacturers are getting really aggressive in the camera technology that they put on their flagship smartphones. The cameras on the current flagship – the Samsung Galaxy S7 – is no slouch. But it looks like Samsung wants to be dominant in this area.

If the rumors coming from Korea are accurate, Samsung may start equipping smartphones with the same technology found on its NX line of professional cameras to give larger megapixels, aperture and lens size. The rumors say that Samsung plans to bring devices to market that have cameras not only with more megapixels, but also smaller lenses and larger apertures. That should be a great selling point when it happens.

According to these sources, consumers may start to see cameras on Samsung smartphones with up to 18 to 24 megapixels, something we haven’t seen on a flagship Samsung device yet. The target is also to have camera modules with 1/2.3” and 1/1.7” lenses and an f/1.4 aperture. If you’re not familiar, these specs can only be found on many standalone high-end cameras on the market today.

Of course, these are all rumors with no confirmation at this time. But it is interesting that Samsung seems hell bent on giving its smartphone users – at least users of the flagship models – the best camera for mobile photography. Perhaps we will see a hint of these plans when the Samsung Galaxy Note 6 rolls in. Perhaps.
