The next Samsung Galaxy smartphone is expected to have an iris scanner. That’s somewhat confirmed after numerous rumors and leaks all point to such new scanning technology. A patent application was recently sighted, telling us something about a new multi-camera iris recognition system. We’ve been hearing talks about the August Galaxy event that will finally introduce a new phone with iris scanning. This idea is nothing new as we’ve heard of such as early as May 2014 when we learned Samsung would be eyeing iris fingerprint scanners for entry level devices.

The tech giant has been sighted to have have filed for “Galaxy Eyeprint” and “Galaxy Iris” at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent-pending invention is said to be a triple-camera system that may include iris scanning. We don’t know how exactly the iris scanning will happen but the images below illustrate how Samsung plans to do it. This isn’t final product patent figure but just an illustration to show that the iris processing system will be part of a Galaxy device.

The said iris recognition system seems to be a bit complicated and may involve a number units including the matching unit, face detection unit, determination unit, and iris detection unit. We’re expecting this system will have several and different types of lenses as well that will help capture the image of a user. There also seems to be an alternative way to recognition. It the system does not recognize the user, a voice message will be activated instead to try scanning again.

Samsung may only be focusing on mobile for iris recognition for now but there’s a possibility this technology will be available in other products like a computer, laptop, digicam, video camera, multimedia player, smartphone, or just about any other devices.

Aside from the iris scanner, Samsung is also believed to be working on an improved fingerprint scanner. Instead of an oblong scanner, the next smartphone might have a new fingerprint reader more similar to Apple’s Home button which appears to be larger but there’s also an image of a reader on the rear of a smartphone. Samsung is known to apply numerous patents but not all are applied or used but at least we have another clue that iris scanning technology is for real so let’s wait and see.
