When you’re out there on the ocean, riding the waves on your board, the last thing you’re probably thinking is, “What are people tweeting at me right now?” You will also probably not be wandering about what the wave conditions are, because you’re already in there, seeing the wave conditions for yourself. But apparently, Samsung thinks surfers might want that information, as they introduced the Galaxy Surfboard, a custom-made board for the surfer that still wants to be connected even when out there with the waves.

Samsung Brasil actually came out with a 3 minute promo video showing how this product can help someone like pro surfer Gabriel Medina as he does his training out in the ocean, away from everyone else. There is a built-in drawer on the side of the board where you can place a smartphone, specifically a Samsung Galaxy S7 and the surface of the board has an LED screen. Medina could read instructions from his coach (and father), tweets from his fans to give him encouragement, and wave and weather conditions as well.

Now for some surfers, the point of the sport, aside from just the sheer joy of surfing, is to get away from the crowds, from “real life” and maybe even connectivity. So we don’t know if a product like this would actually appeal to surfers. For those who do it professionally, it may help in their training, although, really, reading messages on your board may prove distracting.

There aren’t any details yet about how you can get one or what the specs are or if it is something that will be available worldwide or only in Brazil. We’ll wait for further announcements before we pass full judgement. And the video is pretty cool to be fair, so if you like surfing, then check it out.
