The ‘Active’ variant of any new premium Galaxy S is expected to be ready for rough and tough use. The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active may be great for outdoors and even extreme weather conditions but not so much underwater. It shouldn’t be the case but sadly, a number of S7 Active owners are complaining about the problem. The phone failed a water immersion test despite the IP68 certification.
Samsung sent out an official response about the water resistance issue and simply said “Try it.” It was Consumer Reports who published their discoveries that the smartphone failed their tests. Samsung was firm that the the phone was up to their standards and they’re standing by their certification and saying they will “replace any Galaxy S7 active under its standard limited warranty, should water damage occur.”
Interestingly after investigation, the South Korean giant later admitted there were some manufacturing problem that caused the S7 Active phones to fail. They quickly corrected the problem so the phone should be more than ready for more underwater tests and pass.
The Galaxy S7 Active is a premium phone that costs $800. For an expensive smartphone, it really should survive immersion of up to 30 minutes and maximum of five feet under water. An unknown number of phones has been returned and replaced already although Samsung won’t reveal how many exactly. A company exec assured that “compared to the total number of devices sold, it was tiny.” No other details were given but the phones shipping now should be okay but still with limited warranty for one-year.
