There are a lot of various smartwatches in the market now, and the recent entry of the Apple Watch has made it even more competitive and crowded. A new Kickstarter project is attempting to capture a part of the pie with its stand-alone design and features that will appeal to the exercise enthusiast and the outdoor fanatic. Does the Rockioo Watch have what it takes to go head to head with various smartwatches and fitness wearables in the market?

First off, the smartwatch has cellular, 3G, GPS, and WiFi connectivity. This means you’ll be able to use it even if it’s not tethered to a smartphone. It uses the Rockioo OS, which is more or less, a modified version of Android KitKat and runs on a MediaTek 6572 32-bit processor. The display is 1.63 inches and has a 320×320 resolution. You can choose whether to have the 512MB or 1GB RAM and when it comes to internal storage, you can choose the 4 or 16GB one.

It might appeal to fitness enthusiasts as well because of some of its features, like the 9-axis sensor and its 500mAh battery which will help you track all your activities more accurately. It’s also the first wearable to use the aerospace standard atmospheric pressure sensor which gives you an accuracy of up to 0.2m above sea level. It is also water resistant up to 50 meters, has a barometer, magnetometer, and a 6-axis accelerometer.

You will also be able to compete with friends or even strangers around the world, at least when it comes to running, through a global marathon via the cloud. The campaign still has a while to go before it reaches its goal of $200,000, but there are still 25 more days for you to support it. If you want to get the actual watch, you can pledge as low as $129 in their Super Early Bird Special.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.
