The problem when an app gains sudden popularity and the developers or publishers did not expect it is that their servers aren’t prepared for the influx of downloads and users. That is basically what happened to photo manipulation app Prisma when they did an open beta for Android last week which they had to close the day after. But now, it looks like they’ve got a better handle on things as they have finally and officially released the app for Android devices.

If it’s the first time you’re hearing about this app, it is basically a photo manipulation app that lets you turn your ordinary (or even not so ordinary) photos into works of art. It seems like a filter, but what it actually does is recreate your photo and combine it with any of their pre-set art styles like Picasso, Dreams, Ice Cream, Scream, Mondrian, Mononoke, and a bunch of other styles. The result is a pretty neat interpretation of your picture, almost like you get a brand new image.

The process is a combination of neural networks and artificial intelligence, which is actually very rarely used in photo editing or manipulation apps. They use cloud-based processing, and that is why their servers got overloaded when they opened a public beta last week. Hopefully, this official release will not cause that much havoc since they’ve probably fixed the server problems.

You can download Prisma from the Google Play Store for free. Some have been complaining that it’s not as fast as expected and that the app sometimes hangs, but let’s give it a few more weeks and updates, and maybe it will run more smoothly later on.
