Without much fanfare, Chinese OEM Oppo has released the R7 Lite, the cheaper and slightly lower version of their previously released R7. While the specs have been downgraded a bit and the price is of course lower, this new smartphone also has some advantages over the older models of the R7 line. Notably, the new addition to their family is already running the newest Android version, while its predecessor is still waiting for the upgrade needed.

The R7 Lite has a 1280×720 pixel display, which is obviously less than the FullHD that R7 owners enjoy. But it does have 294ppi so the pixel density is still pretty good and it is also on an AMOLED panel. It runs on a Snapdragon 615 chipset, a reduced 2GB RAM, and 16GB built-in storage. But that can be expanded through a microSD card. The main camera is at 13MP, while the front-facing one is at 8MP, so those are pretty decent specs for a mid-tier phone.

What the R7 Lite has more than the original R7 is the fact that it is already on Android 5.1 Lollipop, while the latter is still on KitKat and hasn’t received the upgrade yet. So you could say that those who will buy the lite version has the upper hand, at least in this aspect.

The official online store doesn’t list the R7 Lite yet, but an Indonesian retailer has already put it up on their site. It is listed at $280, which is almost a hundred dollars cheaper than the R7 which retails at $350, at least in Indonesia. For the rest of the world, the R7 is at around $400, so the R7 Lite will probably be at around $320.
