Chinese electronics brand Oppo continues to try to take a share of the lucrative Chinese smartphone market, playing catch up to Xiaomi and Huawei. They’ve announced two new mid-range devices that are pretty decent if you’re looking for a not so expensive but decent unit. The Oppo Neo 5 (2015), not to be confused with the previously launched Neo 5, and the Neo 5s. Both have almost the same specs, with a touch of the more expensive R1x.

The main differences between the two devices is the chipset and the fact that the Oppo 5s has regionally dependent LTE bands support;. The Neo 5 (2015) runs on a 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor with an MT6582 SoC. The Neo 5s runs with a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor and Adreno 306 GPU. When it comes to the display, it’s not pretty impressive, with both having a 4.5-inch IPS display with a 854 x 480 pixel resolution. Both have a relatively low 1GB RAM and 8GB of internal storage. You can extend space by adding a microSD card expandable to 32GB (Neo 5 2015) and 128GB (Neo 5s).

When it comes to the all-important camera, there isn’t much to be impressed about. Both have an 8MP main cam with a f/2.2 lens with LED flash, while the 2MP front-facing camera has a f.2,8 lens. It’s decent but not something to write home about. Design-wise, it comes with a double-layer metallic structure that Oppo is known for to dissipate the heat. It also uses the glass-like reflective back cover case which looks a bit like the more high-end R1x.

Again, if you’re looking for a smartphone with better specs, then this isn’t the one you should be looking at. But if decent specs and hopefully a decent price as well is your basis for getting a new device, these Chinese brands aren’t a bad way to go.
