Battery drain is real. It’s a problem every mobile phone user experiences especially in this day and age where there are too many entertaining apps, exciting games, and hilarious videos to get busy with. The magnificent OnePlus 3 is no different. We were impressed with this smartphone because of the price and the powerful Snapdragon 820 but unfortunately, battery life is a disappointment.

Battery management isn’t the only problem. We’ve also reported the aggressive RAM management which is supposed to be fixed already. There’s the battery drain issue that OnePlus said they fixed already with a major software update but guys at PhoneArena said battery life was–still is–terrible.

No doubt the OnePlus 3 was well-designed and well-built as we’ve seen in a teardown but inside, the software and several other factors are making the battery drain faster than ever. The reviewers even checked by putting the phone in idle and found out that it drains 1% after every four minutes. It’s a frustrating problem and it seems there’s no solution yet. Deleting known battery-draining apps like Facebook and disabling the fingerprint scanner feature didn’t help.

What’s good is that the problem seems to be not experienced by every OnePlus 3 user. That’s a bit of good news but that doesn’t change the fact that there are still OnePlus 3 owners getting annoyed by the problem.

We’re crossing our fingers that OnePlus finally fixes this issue. It may be just a bug but it’s quite a big one.

  1. I find myself not caring so much. Twenty or thirty minutes on the charger once during the day leaves me with enough juice to make it through the night. I have recently stopped charging overnight as the extended time on the trickle charge is a determinant to the lithium. 40 minutes on the charger during my morning routine is usually enough to full charge.

  2. You can have issues on any Android device if you’re receiving frequent wakelocks which are what keep the device awake during idle and prevent the phone from entering low-power deep sleep. Installed applications will always play a huge role in frequency of wakelocks, and they can be fickle across devices and software. Won’t be consistent. It’s not some bug that can be addressed though Doze attempted to universally reduce idle drain. Unless you’re specifically getting wakelocks from system applications, it won’t be addressed in updates. The Stock ROM is already clean and close to vanilla Android.

I always suggest using Greenify (Hibernates Background Applications), Amplify (Directly Restricts Wakelocks), and Power Nap (Similar to Doze But Works in Conjunction) to maximize idle battery life and counteract wakelocks.

Greenify can also be used in Non-Root Mode though it will be much more restricted.

  3. The source was updated to make it clear that the drain is caused by a Google wakelock. Nothing to do with OnePlus.

  4. Lol…. The one plus isn’t any faster than the s7.. Simply the s7 has a qhd screen the one plus ha only fhd. Its easy to score higher with much lower res…

    • I don´t think you fully understand how benchmarks work, besides it´s half the price with better everything except for the camera. QHD is absolutely not needed, I have a G4 too with QHD and it´s really a meaningless difference.
