As everyone had been expecting, the new Nexus 7 has been announced. And nicely, it looks like we can now begin calling it the Nexus 7, as opposed to the Nexus 7 2. The breakfast also brought details of Android 4.3, but for now how about we concentrate on the tablet itself. After all, this Nexus 7 refresh does bring some worthwhile changes. Talk of this new Nexus 7 began with a mention of how they were “staying focused on the same things that made the original so successful.”

The display remains at 7-inches, however we are seeing a big increase in terms of resolution and ppi. The Nexus 7 will arrive sporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a ppi of 323. Based on comments from the event, that means the Nexus 7 now has “the highest ppi of any tablet on the market.” Simply put, if you were hoping for this refresh to bring an improved display — it is safe to say that you got your wish. Another notable improvement will come in with the RAM, which has been doubled and now sits at 2GB.

Going along with the 2GB of RAM is a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with Adreno 320 graphics and options to get either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage. One item that hasn’t been added was a microSD card slot. This new Nexus 7 has wireless charging built-in (Qi compatible) and is SlimPort enabled.

The remaining specs include a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera, NFC, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The tablet will weight in at 11.2 ounces (slightly less than the original) and measure in at 7.9 x 4.5 x 0.3-inches. And for those keeping track, that is slightly thinner as compared to the original. The Nexus 7 is said to have up to nine hours of HD video playback and up to 10 hours of web browsing. There are also stereo speakers and a soft-touch backing similar to that of the original.

Anyway, specs aside we are fairly certain that many are already willing to make the purchase. Pre-orders have already begun with some retailers and are likely to begin shortly with several others. Of course, the Nexus 7 will also be available direct from the Google Play Store. The price will be $230 for the 16GB model and $270 for the 32GB model.

  1. But has the color improved? One of the downsides I always found with my Nexus 7 is that the color just looked dead when I looked at the same images side-by-side with an iPad. I love my Nexus 7, but I was really hoping to hear about more improvements in the display other than just higher ppi.
