Last January, the two industry leaders in wireless charging, the Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) and Power Matters Alliance (PMA), announced that they have signed a deal that will merge the two organizations to create a united front that will push the technology in the mobile market. It’s been months since we’ve heard anything about them, but now it can be told that the deal has been finalized and the merger is finally, truly underway.

The merger includes combining the key leadership and contributors in order to establish a standard that will encompass consumer, medical, military and industrial applications. They still don’t have an official name for now and this will be announced later this year. The past few months have seen both organizations working together to create their integration plan which is now finally being implemented. Up next, they will be creating the coordinated product roadmap which will showcase their collaboration.

According to Ron Resnick, the president of PMA who will also become the president of the merged organization, this move will grow the wireless charging market, with a focus on consumer awareness so that all markets will “experience the true potential that wireless power” can bring to our current lives and even to the future products and technologies that will result from this. Dr. Kamil Grajski, the board chair and president for A4WP will serve as the chairman for the new entity. He believes that focusing on consumer applications first will eventually lead to volume economics, and with them combining their powers, the process will be accelerated.

The merger will bring together 170 member companies, including AT&T, Broadcom, Flextronics, Gill Electronics, Integrated Device Technologies, Intel, MediaTek, Powermat Technologies, Procter & Gamble, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Starbucks and WiTricity. We’re pretty excited to see if this will indeed push wireless charging onto public consciousness.
