It is rumors like these that give fuel to the whispers that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 just might not be up to scratch. Word is out that LG is not giving up on being a player in the processor industry, even after the high-profile failure of its second effort, the NUCLUN processor for the LG G3 Screen. It seems set on a new high-end processor, even as it has seemingly committed to Qualcomm for its 2015 flagship offerings.
Rumors say that LG is planning an octa-core processor using ARM’s new Cortex-A72 chips paired with the already standard Cortex-A53 chips. That pairing will mean that this hypothetical new processor will be a high-end chip that should be scheduled for late 2015 to early 2016.
Sources also say that the rumored chip will be built by TSMC on a 20nm process – even as Exynos, Samsung’s relatively successful in-house chip-makers, are now hyping on a newer, more efficient 14nm process. It is most likely a source of irritation and envy for LG that Samsung is now a major player in the processor manufacturing industry through Exynos, while their own efforts have been all for naught (as yet).
These are all rumors at this point, but they seem reasonably placed and the logic behind the claims is understandable. We must remember that the NUCLUN, LG’s last processor effort, was highly expensive to build and relatively under-performed when compared to the alternatives. We hope LG finally finds traction if they go on to try again.
Odin didn’t under perform … Just released later than expected thus was compared against newer competition.
It was still better than a lot of processors out there!
