Today Metro PCS announced the Huawei Ascend upgrade to Android 2.2 is now available. The Ascend launched back in December and even though this is only for Android 2.2 at least it is seeing the update faster than many other phones in the past. There is no talk regarding Gingerbread for now but an update is an update right.

I did say “use caution” in my title and with good reason. Apparently MetroPCS or Huawei or someone over there is not very familiar with how most of the Android world works regarding updates. The update to Android 2.2 for the Huawei Ascend WILL wipe ALL user data. All your applications, all your games and their save points, your icons on home screens will all be wiped and all. Most updates from almost all other carriers and manufacturers make updates a painless procedure that backs up everything. This is not the case here.

This is not a huge deal, but for those wanting the upgrade you should probably download AngryBirdsBackup from the market and backup anything else on the phone. Anything stored on the MicroSD card will not be wiped such as photos and such but make sure to backup everything before doing the update. When it boots on Android 2.2 it will be like a brand new device all over again, fun but a process to set up. I don’t want to be too harsh but they should probably include a backup method in their update in the future to make things easy for users.   1. There’s a great build of cyanogenmod 7 for the ascend already, I don’t see the point in going for a retarded stock version of this phone. It’s overclocked to 748mhz I believe, I’m no longer using that phone so I can’t remember. Anyone reading this should Google it, you’ll find it easily.

  5. i updated my huawei ascend, and the person that wrote this article is 100% accurate. it does wipe out everything, like reset to factory settings. i lost all my texts and all my contacts. i had to reenter them all. the home screen, or whatever it’s called is different. i was us ed to my other phone, so it’s an adjustment. but there are cool features like when texting, i can press the microphone button and speak and it will type my words! i think that is awesome. but i have yet to figure out how to get my phone to vibrate when i have a text. my settings are on vibrate all, yet there is no notification for texts. all in all, i am satisfied with my upgrade. 

    • when you update your hauwei ascent,well before u have to use metro back up so they can save all ur contacs..then make the update to ur fone,so if u didnt do the back up, everything u had in ur fone,is gona get lost for shure….SO MAKE SHURE U USE METRO BACK UP….THEN UPDATE THEN GO TO METRO BACK UP AGAIN (APP) AND UR CONTACTS WILL BE BACK 🙂 IN UR FONE….

    • its easy, go to your message. where you scroll from person to person. hit ur menu button go to setting at the bottom right and scroll till you get to vibrate and notification. then on your volume button on the side of your phone put it on vibrate. if its not on vibrate it will do both ring and vibrate. got any question msg me at austin.shadwick@yahoo.com , anyone who is having question you may msg me as well

  6. one more thing- now with the upgrade, when i plug my phone into the computer, i can not access my pics on my card. my phone says “no media found”, then when i unplug the usb, the pics show up. can anyone help me?

  12. I did the upgrade, found that you need to accept communications on the phone when you plug it into the usb port.. however cannot get any new pics off my phone.just can see the old ones. they must be stored somewhere not accessable via usb. any advice?

  17. i downloaded the 2.2 and every thing is great but now that i did that the time on the phone is four hours different. how can i fix that.

  19. my ascends internet does not work but when i connect to a secure wifi it connects. why does it not connect anywhere else? same for my gps. anywhere i go even with full bars, i cant get gps or internet working.

    • mine does the same thing. i was informed that you had to have the better of the two android plans. take it to your nearest main cricket store or call and ask them to reboot it for it and make sure you tell them not to wipe your phone clean, while your at it ask them to update your phone. the ascend 2 has a newer program than the 1st one. i hope this fixes your problem. you can ask me more question just email me at austin.shadwick@yahoo.com

    • i personally like 2.3 better but that a personal idea of it. but if i were u go to your contacts and add all of them to ur google account on ur fone, then remove ur sd card and run the update. otherwise you lose ur contacts. doing the upgrade you will lose everything. it sucks but its how it is.

I have one Hell of an issue…my phone is rooted I have 2.3.4 & my WiFi doesn’t work anymore after my phone has been disconnected….I can’t connect to any WiFi at all….& I know for a fact it has nothing to do with me being rooted…..my phone has been disconnected before…..& I was still capable of getting WiFi….any tips?…

    •  im gonna go ahead and say stupid. did you read ANY of this article? the ONLy way you might be able to get any numbers back is if you ever synced it up with a gmail account, then re-sync it, then MAYBE you’ll get numbers back, but hey, half this blog was about saving all your data and making a makeshift “back-up”
