The new HTC One (M8) may have just been announced, but developers and tinkerers may soon already be able to get their hands on one in just a few weeks. HTC has now put up the ordering page for the developer edition of its 2014 flagship.

Verizon might have gotten the honor of being able to sell the HTC One (M8) on the very day of its announcement, but developers aren’t going to be left behind now that the Developer Edition is available for purchase. Of course, the Google Play Edition has already been up for a day now, but like any other GPE device, that variant runs Google’s vanilla Android, which may be what some desire. The HTC One (M8) Developer Edition, however, runs with HTC Sense 6 but offers an unlockable bootloader as well.

This means that along with hardware features standard in all HTC One (M8) variants, including the 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, 5-inch 1080p display, HTC BoomSound, and Duo Camera, developers will still be able to enjoy HTC-exclusive features like the updated BlinkFeed, Zoe, and Motion Gestures but still have that ability to tinker with their devices the way they want. Users who would just like a standard device without being tethered to any carrier might want to opt for the Unlocked version instead.

The HTC One (M8) Developer Edition will cost $649, similar to the Unlocked version, which is still cheaper than the $699 of the Google Play Edition. There are only two colors available for this variant, Amber Gold and Gunmetal Gray. HTC notes that this Developer Edition will be available for shipping within 1 to 2 weeks from the date of purchase.

  1. Still confused by lack of information – Google Play site indicates a GSM Only Dev/GPE editions. HTC Online Store does not specify this limitation. Is there a Developer or GPE device available and capable of running on the Verizon network?
