HTC has confirmed it is pushing out the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S. The OTA update will be flagged up with a message on the smartphones themselves, and bring the handsets up to speed with newer HTC devices like the HTC Desire S.

Of course you’ll still have HTC Sense and all the usual apps, but we’re expecting a little extra speed and stability thanks to the joys of Gingerbread. HTC advises backing up your phone before you upgrade, though it’s not clear if the update will actually wipe your phone in the process.

We’re checking our Desire HD now and will report back when we find out more. Let us know how you get on in the comments!

  3. Just got the OTA update for my HTC Desire HD. I’m in Germany and Vodafone’s my carrier. The update is NOT 2.3.4 but 2.3.3.

Major changes after the 100MB OTA update were the applications which are now categorised into All Apps, Favotires and Downloaded.

The notifications pull-down menu now includes 2 tabs at the bottom, one for notifications and the other for quick settings which feature toggle buttons for Wifi/Bluetooth/Wifi Hotspot/GPS and Mobile Network. It also has a link to All Settings.

In the All Apps menu, the page is no longer freely-scrollable. The apps are gridded and separated to pages of 4×4 app icons per page and separated by a gentle gray line.

In the settings, the about phone section features a new (at least I haven’t noticed it in the past) button called “Tell HTC” which enables error reporting to HTC.

A large number of the HTC Hub widgets and HTC Apps/Plugin (Picasa/Media Link, etc) require updates which are already available after a simple click on the HTC Hub app.

That’s all the major changes I found in my 2 minutes play around with the updated phone. At frist it seemed a bit laggy. Which fixed itself after I installed all required updates (HTC Hub/Apps) and restarted the phone.

    • It seems that since the update the call quality deteriorated significantly and there are a lot of lost calls and interruptions at A1 (Austria). The update itself, like well described above, looks good, but if it is for the sake of bad telefon-quality, i would have evaded it.

  4. HTC desire HD Belgium: my updated was successful I didn’t back up but all my data is still there. It didn’t wrap my data out. Happy with updated 🙂

      • I contacted HTC regarding update for unbranded Incredible S and Desire HD in the UK and here what I got:

‘Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC Incredible S.

I can confirm that the Gingerbread update has been released for the unbranded devices. However as you can appreciate the update cannot be sent to all mobile devices at the same time therefore I believe you will receive the update within approximately 2 weeks.

        I hope that this helps.

If you have any further queries or problems please do not hesitate to contact us again.

        Many thanks

To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number xxxxxxxx’

      • thanks mate…. ya HTC fb page says the same thing…. this going to be along few days…

    • You have to go to settings, then scroll ALL the way down and you’ll find “About Phone”, click on that and it will take you to a new page, at the top it will say “System Software Updates”, click on that and at the bottom it will say “Check Now” click that and it will show you the notification again 😀 😀

    • Yeh I know 🙁 But I contacted HTC Leaf and they said it will be available in the sometime in the 3rd Week Of May because Of the Carriers

  8. The UK will receive the update soon, before the three network announces there update in mid may, in the next few days it should be available.

      • As far as I have been testing it (for about 5 min :D) it has some nice features, and I can tell you that it’s not worst than 2.2.1 (which I had before). I hope that I will not be disappointed from this point on.

But also I have not received the Android 2.3 update. When checking via phone menu- it says no update available :(. Whats up with that HTC?

    • for all those seeking for updates pls be reminded that you are entering your phone to a great disaster froyo is much better indeed somes are great like sound be equalized mature black themes but equivallent to that is much more more many application is very unstable gameloft games, wifi, battery shortened so i suggest to sticked in froyo until all the technical issues resolved…

  11. I have unlocked incredible s in red color, i tried update but i got the message saying it’s up to date (android 2.2.1) so i emailed htc and asked them about it, and i got a reply from them.

“The updates for the phones are not being released for all units at one
time but the phones are being in queue under their serial numbers. I
recommend you to set up your phone for scheduled check of update so you
will receive notification immediately when the update is available for
    your device.”

shouldn’t unlocked phones to be the first ones who should get update first?

    • update released yesterday in Ireland, got notification when my HTC Desire HD picked up my Wi-Fi at home yesterday.

      • Hi,I’m on Emobile and still have’nt received the update, what network are you on?
        Thanks

      • From what I’ve read on other forums, the updates are released in batches, by serial number. It can take up to a month to update all of the phones in a country. Also some networks are quicker getting the release out than others depending on how much ‘tweaking’ they want to do ( adding their own logos etc.).
Still no sign of it on my UK Orange branded phone.

  12. please those who getting this update, is your phone sim free or under vodafone, because here in england ive not seen any update and im using a sim free DHD

  13. I have a HTC Desire HD on Orange. Will this update available to Orange network users and approx what time will it update? Thanks!

  14. It have arrived to Sweden, but i still don´t recieved an update yet and its frustrating! (And yeah, im also from sweden)

  15. I’ve just downloaded it here in Ireland, have to say i’m not really sure what all the fuss is about, it’s only a slight tweek to the UI and a few bits here and there but nothing really significant to get worked up about…Remains to be seen if it improves the Battery life on my DHD as i only have it now about an hour or so! Although it does run more smoothly…All in all from the time that you start to download the update to the time that the phone is ready for use it takes about twenty minuts. The download done over a data connection, for most of the download it had a 3G connection! …but to anyone who is still waiting in anticipation like i was, trust me it’s certainly not gonna blow your mind…Maybe i just had too high an expectation!?

    • …Also you don’t have to back up your phone before updating, at least i didn’t anyway, everything was as i left it before the update!

      • I went outside and checked for it in the Check for updates section under settings…You ahould have it by now!

      • WiFi not working, cuts in and out. Battery life is exactly the same, Very dissapointed! Also not sure if it’s a problem with the netwaork or what but i seem to get dropped data connection more frequently than before i got the update! The only plus is that it isn’t as laggy, but that’s only saying it isn’t “AS” laggy as before.

  16. Anyone had wifi problems since upgrading? I seem to have difficulty picking up wifi networks which previously worked fine

    • Sumit your phone has english (India) A9191? Because it been sold in the US and is unloock. It will be the same that yours for the update?

  17. Updated my Desire HD to 2.3 this morning. Beware. The Wifi doesn’t work after the update. Battery life also seems to have been shorten.

    Not happy at the moment!

  18. Updated yesterday..didnt have issue with wifi..batery life improved a bit..however a big letdown on gameloft games that cant be played after update

  19. Very laggy update! Sms problem, slow down the phone(hi cpu), wifi is working for now.
This is my second week with new update, and waiting for new update fix.

  20. Just got the update last night. It’s 2.36.405.8 (not .6), and there are no issues after updating. wifi works as always.

      • My phone is not branded, yet purchased in the UK.
I haven’t noticed any speed change. It seems to be working very much at the same speed as with Froyo (which is very good).
As for the battery: I’m not sure. I never take to “the extreme”. I have a charger in my car and in my office, and when I’m at either, I’m recharging it.

  21. Well I’m Andy frm the UK I’m on the three network well I got my update the other day and well I do like it but it had a couple of bugs in it I lost my playlist’s on my music player but that’s no biggy but my keyboard is still the same ad before not too sure on the battery yet

  22. Here is the crank with 3 people they have the update but are updating in imei order and releasing 30.000 updates.per day as per network allocation and stream rate so if.your on 3 like me and you have just got your phone we may have a long Wait ……………..

All information here was collected while collaborating with Google HTC and Network 3 uk

  23. Im on 3uk, update came through last night, it seems to have made my ringtones a lot louder which is good because i always thought they were very quiet. The screen seems more vivid too although i could just be imagining this.

  24. Downloaded 2 3 gingerbread here in Thailand on a Desire HD purchased in the UK no problems no need to back anything

  25. Updated my HTC Desire HD with new software update “Android 2.3 GINGERBREAD”, today…….!!!! I am a Vodafone Mumbai customer. My new Android 2.3 software build no is : 2.37.720.3. Waited too long for it. There are changes in user interface, bugs fiixed, additonal tab at the bottom right for “QUICK SETTING” provided when you pull down the notification area, slicker operation while scrolling, screen doesnt hang, iccons dont freeze, touch respose is better………yet to discover more……!!!!
HAPPY UPDATING TO ALL OF YOU THERE………WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR…….???

  26. got d update 2 days back (mumbai India ) . other than quick setting option n minor change to aapp drawer I don’t find any noticable difference . I wish HTC gave those gingerbreadish fluroscent status bar icons. Homerun 3d still lags n even crashes which is disappointing for a device that’s branded HD !

  27. Incredible S upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.3

Systems fonts have become bigger, destroying the interface, just looks ugly. Major disappointment, interface looks ugly. why have such a high res screen if you have to increase the font size so tastelessly

    WiFi issue, it just disappears.

  28. is any1 else experiencing the wifi issue… it just stops scanning in like a second and doesnt connect to the wifi…

    • Yep. Im experiencing this. It says its connected and shows the wifi signal strength but i cannot use the internet at all whilst connected to the wifi and says that the connection failed
      HTC desire hd Vodafone Australia

  29. I’m in Australia and have the HTC Incredible S on the Optus Network, which came shipped with the Gingerbread version 2.3. Got OS but referring to Adnan, I also do have the same problem with connecting to Wi-fi (but only if the router is an N specific one). I heard it may be a bug tha google has to fix, or I will return the phone to Optus.

  31. I’m just wondering what we can do in order for google or android to repair the problem as my home network is based on an N wireless router. I have even tried changing the broadcast mode, to both G and B, but still no success. Really frustrating. Who knows at the end of the day the NIC could be faulty, not the software of gingerbread.

    • I have finally overcome the problem, by downloading software from the droid Market. This particular software is called ‘ipconfig’. As people may know, HTC did not include any available settings that enable you to have a static ip address. You simply assign your own IP, and then it works. For some reason, the phone gets confused not enabling it to have an ip assigned to it by the DHCP on the router.

    • You should have it by now if your phone is unbranded, i got mine a month ago. if not then it’s up to the  service provider to decide when they will release their version of it…Just to let ye know the updat e is a joke! I get missed calls because of a weak GSM signal, dropped WiFi/Data connection all the time…It’s terrible, if i could go back to 2.3 i would! FULL OF BUGS!! I live in Meath.

    • on three we get what we pay for!! poor service!! while all other network providers keep there customers happy.. three like there customer service fail again!! cant wait for my contract to end & join a network who i can trust!! suppose all we can do is keep our fingers crossed!!

  33. Not on Three network!! failed us again!! Full of excuses & lies!! well done to all other networks for getting your customer update out!!

  35. Hello everybody,

I got the update to 2.3.3 three days ago (here in Isarel).
The speed and respose of the UI is really noticible, also the battery life has grown significantly.
The only issue is the WIFI (just like many others), well I talked to HTC yesterday and they told me that
they are aware of the problem and are testing a new patch to fix the WIFI issue and will send it OTA as soon as possible.
