Like us, you probably were surprised that it has been three years already since the original Chromecast stick launched in a wave of hype and excitement. We’ve been streaming and casting so much video that we barely noticed! The excitement, if we remember correctly, was that at that time, you were able to make your dumb big screen TV a whole lot smarter with just a USD$35.00 HDMI dongle.

Google has celebrated with a cute GIF, although we are kinda surprised that there is no promo involved. But what the heck, the Chromecast is so darned cheap that it’s actually a “no brainer” purchase. Something this cheap doesn’t have any right at all to be this useful, but after three years, the Chromecast has indeed proven its worth.

Just last year, Google launched the 2nd generation Chromecast, a for-real dongle affair this time rather than the rigid HDMI stick design of the original one. The new Chromecast – a rounder version of it – improves upon the original with a more flexible design, support for AC and 5GHz WiFi networks, more color options, and has resolved the overheating issues that plagued the first design. It also comes in an audio-only version that works via a standard headphone jack.

If you’ve noticed, Google Cast functionality is already built into a lot of Android TV set-top boxes and televisions. That tells you the wide acceptance of this simple Google technology. Not bad for a three-year-old, isn’t it?
