It has been about 2 weeks since the Google Nexus One got unboxed, this time gets not only unboxed, but also a hands-on with video by the folks over at Engadget. Since January 5th is tomorrow, its only logical to start getting all kind of news of this great device.
The handset is made by HTC, as we already know, and runs Android 2.1 with a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, has 512MB of ROM, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB), a 3.7-inch, 480 x 800 display and lacks multitouch. The design and feel of the phone is much better and faster than Motorola’s DROID, but it’s not mind blowing. But opening applications and moving between them was super fast. The camera seems to be about average, but the software for it is better then the DROID’s.
Google included some visual enhancements and minor UI tweaks, one very noticeable is the “live” wallpapers, some of which react to the touch of your fingers. The animations throughout the phone are nice and make Android 2.1 feel more polished than previous iterations, but there is a long way to go to match the iPhone or the Palm Pre. In short, they don’t think the Nexus One is an iPhone killer, but they do believe it will be a good competitor. You can check their gallery of pictures here.
