There are a lot of personalized news services out there, like Flipboard, Zite, Feedly, etc, so you’ll never run out of ways to curate and receive the news that you really care about. But if you are a Google fanboy/girl, and you are dependent on their eco-system, then the Google News & Weather, as minimalist as it is, will have a certain appeal for you. The newest update to the app brings even more improvements into the way they personalize your news and also the way you receive them.

If you’re a news hound or if it is actually part of your job to keep abreast of the latest news, sometimes you’re afraid you might miss out on something really important. Now you can receive notifications for breaking news (although it’s still unclear what constitutes breaking news for Google) on your device so that you’ll be ahead of everyone else (well, those who do not have Google News & Weather at least). When you update your app and open it for the first time, you’ll get a prompt if you want to receive said notifications. So don’t worry, this is an opt-in feature for the app.

There is also now a new section called “Suggested For You” and this is Google’s way of letting you know it’s reading your mind. The stories in this section are based on the history of your searches and also the cards you keep on your Google Now. So don’t be surprised if some “questionable” stories start showing up, that just means you probably need to “clean up” your search history. Don’t worry, you can also tell the app you’re not interested in certain topics if they still keep appearing in your feed.

If you don’t have it yet on your smartphone or tablet, you can download it for free from the Google Play Store. Some Android devices have it pre-installed or comes as a widget so you can also check it out.
