For those who commute daily or drive to and from work often, having navigation apps is pretty much standard. But if your data allocation is pretty limited, you sometimes would not want to use them because they eat up a lot of kilobytes since they’re almost always on. But an upcoming update to Google Maps will supposedly give you a WiFi only option for times when you want to save up on data, together with other new features like mass transit delay notifications.
When the update finally rolls out to your account, you will then have the option to restrict data usage to WiFi only when it comes to your Google Maps. Go to your Settings screen and on the second line, you should see a toggle with the title “WiFi only”. If it’s already set there, then your maps should become offline (except for the ones that you save for offline of course) once you leave the safety of your WiFi connection. The first time that you choose the WiFi only setting, you’ll get a reminder that it may still use a small amount of data when you open it.

For those who use the bus or train to commute to and from your destination, you will have customizable notifications in case you want to be notified if there are mass transit delays. In case there are a lot of train or bus lines in your area, you can choose which ones are significant for you so you’ll only receive notifications for them. Apparently, there are some glitches for this feature, but when it rolls out, hopefully they have fixed them.

You can wait for the official update to Google Maps to roll out to your account. But if you’re too impatient and you want to experience these new features, you can always download the APK from the link.
