So what do you do in your spare time? You probably read a book, watch a movie, or at least do some home spring cleaning. But apparently, Google engineers can’t seem to stop creating things. One of them, Max Braun, has been experimenting with the idea of making a smart mirror, and now he has unveiled the initial results and it looks like something we would actually love to have on our bathroom mirror.

What his smart mirror basically does is to show you basic information that you would see on your Google Now cards, which is the weather, the time, and even the top headlines for the day. He used a two-way mirror, a display panel and controller board, and of course several components and even arts and crafts supplies. What you get is a classy looking, elegant smart mirror that seems to have been crafted straight from Google’s labs.

It’s actually not the first time that someone has experimented with a smart mirror. Just last November, a home project by developer Hannah Mitt and a guide created by Becky Stern resulted in a DIY smart home mirror. And why it wouldn’t win any prizes for design, at least it works. Then earlier than that, a student named Nick Nothom was able to mirror notifications onto his, well, mirror. Again, it wasn’t the most slickly designed result, but it was just for a research project and it did work, so let’s wait for him to finish his studies and create something even better.

Braun’s side project is the closest one that we have right now to a smart mirror, and hopefully, his bosses will take notice and pretty soon we’ll have a true blue smart mirror consumer product that will keep us informed even as we brush our teeth or do our makeup and skincare rituals.

  1. Not just for bathrooms, but executive offices, board rooms and a frosted glass mirror displaying advertising or company information in reception would look very classy.
