Google is serious to up its ante when it comes to the mobile payment game. There’s a tight competition among Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay not only in the United States but also in some parts of the world. Mobile payment transactions are not the standard yet and it may be long before that happens because not everyone is open to cashless purchases but for Google, it will continue to improve by adding more features and partners.
The Internet giant recently announced that it’s piloting a new payment app. We’re not sure if this will ever replace Android Pay but Google only wants the convenience of more consumers. Google is calling South Bay residents to join a testing program for a particular app that could be launched in the near future. Initially named as Hands Free, the app could be another way to pay for goods and service in different establishments and retail locations. App is aimed to allow an easier, quicker, and completely hands-free shopping.
Those in the South Bay could sign up and test the Hands Free app. It’s not just for Android fans but also for iOS users. It can be used in several testing locations like Papa John’s, McDonald’s and some local eateries in the Bay Area. It’s only a pilot program so we may expect some kinks.
The idea is for a terminal or cashier to accept payment when you utter the words “I’ll pay with Google”. It should be that easy but you need the Hands Free app installed on your device with WiFi or Bluetooth low energy connection turned on. Saying those magic words would be enough but cashier would have to check and confirm your identity first.
As part of the Hands Free program, Google is also experimenting on visual identification to allow faster checkouts. In some stores, a camera would be available to check your identity for early authentication of your profile. The idea really is to eliminate the task of bringing out your phone or smartwatch to pay. Google wants the world to experience totally “hands free” shopping and maybe this Hands Free service would finally make that happen. From cashless to phoneless transactions, what’s next then?
If you’re interested, you may sign up with Google to try Hands Free. Google is giving each tester a $5 discount off the first Hands Free purchase.
