Have you missed being the digital mayor of your office or your favorite coffeeshop or bookshop back in the good ole days of the original Foursquare? Well, now you can go back to being your competitive self, at least when it comes to checking in at your favorite places. They’re bringing back the mayorship of each place, but instead of being on the new Foursquare, you can now do it on Swarm, which replaced it as your official check-in app.

The rules have not changed, except that you won’t be mayor on Foursquare, but rather on Swarm, since you’re not able to check in with the former anyway. You become the mayor if you’ve checked in more than any other person in the past 30 days. But if you think you can do so by checkin in 10 times everyday, you are only allowed to do so once a day. And even though they have just started bringing back the mayorship today, they have been tracking the check-ins for the past month, so you’ll still get yours if you’ve been doing so this past month.

You still won’t get any other rewards, other than a shiny, virtual crown that people as competitive as you are out to steal. You can also brag about it on social media, although we don’t know if it still means anything, unlike when Foursquare first came about a few years ago.

When they split into two separate apps, people weren’t so thrilled about it, but the past few months have seen improvements in both Swarm and the recommendation and discovery app of Foursquare. Bringing back the mayorship in Swarm may just be the right move to revitalize interest in the idea of check-ins. They should hope it’s not too late though. Your update of Swarm should now be arriving on your Google Play Store.
