There are around 7 billion people currently in our planet. And apparently, 1/7 of those are using Facebook Messenger every month. The messaging giant from the social media juggernaut has sent out a thank you message now that they have reached a milestone of 1 billion active users every month. And they also took a look back at all the various numbers and figures that have made the messaging service one of the most popular ways to communicate with loved ones, colleagues, businesses, and even strangers.

Facebook Messenger’s growth has grown extensively this year, adding 100 million active users every three months. To put that into perspective, WhatsApp hit 1 billion users this February, but they’ve been around for 7 years. Messenger got its standalone app just last 2011, and now four years later, it has reached the same milestone. It has been downloaded more than 1 billion times on Android and more than a billion messages are exchanged every month. A staggering 17 billion photographs are also sent every month through Messenger. That’s a lot of photos, really.

Messenger has also become more than just sending text-based messages to other people. A lot of people are using it to call their loved ones and colleagues. Facebook claims that 10% of the calls that happen on Voice over IP are actually done over Messenger. 380 million stickers and 22 million GIFs are exchanged on it daily. 1.2 billion games of basketball and 250 million games of soccer have also been done over Messenger.

And now, lately, Messenger has gone into bots and creating ways of transactions between people and businesses. You can send money, call up a car on Uber, have flowers delivered to your mom, buy your next outfit, all without having to leave the app. More than 18,000 bots are now present on Messenger. To “celebrate” this 1 billion milestone, there is a balloon gift on the Messenger app that you can send to your friends.
