Now that we’ve seen what Motorola has been brewing all along, we’re curious to know what are the other Moto Mods available. We only know four so far: the JBL SoundBoost Speaker, Moto Insta-Share Projector, and Kate Spade New York and TUMI battery packs. Details are scarce but we know more will be introduced by Motorola and Lenovo this Summer. Other OEMs and accessory makers may even join the trend and introduce their own Moto Mods for the Moto Z Droid.
We’re looking forward to when the Moto Z Droid with Moto Mods becomes available from Verizon. Expect to see experimental mods to crop up as developers will soon be able to work on reference kits for custom mods. Motorola has decided to open a customization program so imagine more cool mods being shown off in the next few weeks or months.
At the Lenovo Tech World yesterday, Lenovo showed off how the idea works. Two prototype mods were demoed, giving devs ideas how they can make the Moto Mods more fun and interesting.
These are only samples of experimental modes. You’ll see a unique backplate and a nice display mod. We’re guessing Motorola learned a thing or two from the old Project Ara, which as we already know, is not yet done.
Lenovo and Motorola’s hard work will soon be rewarded as the Moto Mods on a Moto Z Droid look bolder, more interesting, and really achievable. The age of modular smartphone has just started and looks like the mobile industry is on the right track. We’re still hoping the Project Ara will be completed by next year but before that one, there’s the LG G5, Phonebloks, and the PuzzlePhone, Fairphone 2 to check out.
The Moto Z seems to be easier to upgrade because the Moto Mods are designed to be attached to the backplate. We don’t know how this will happen exactly but the possibilities are endless.
