“Encryption” has been a huge buzzword this year, after the open letter by Tim Cook and Apple’s subsequent battle against the FBI, not to mention the support they’ve gotten from major tech companies like Google, Samsung, etc. And so while that battle is still waging, we have several apps that have been beefing up their encryption features and some new ones coming into the market that offer encrypted services. One of those is a messaging service called Peerio, and it’s now available as an Android app.

Previously, Peerio was only a desktop service, ever since it launched in January of last year. But now, finally, they’ve made their encrypted messaging service, not to mention the cloud storage, group chat, and offline access, available on your mobile device through an Android app. They’ve retained the three-tab feel (messages, files, contacts) that we’ve seen in their desktop version but the developers have rewritten the core API to improve the app’s performance. And they’ve even made the code public on Github.

The app also uses Touch ID for a one-touch login. Well, that is if your device has a fingerprint sensor of course. You will also be able to access offline your previously loaded messages. After you’ve logged in for the first time, all the messages and the file index will be cached locally on your smartphone, but still with encryption of course. When you get other people to download the app and use your 6-character referral code, you get to have an additional 250MB cloud storage, both you and the new user.

And since everything is securely encrypted on the cloud, you’ll be able to sync and access your messages and data across all the platforms where it is available. You can download the Peerio Android app from the Google Play Store for free.
