Mobile game app publisher Spellgun is placing its bets on a game called “Clash of Gods” to make it big in the Western market, replicating the success the original game had in China. The game is based on a Chinese game app that has had massive success in the Chinese market, and Spellgun is hoping the RPG-slash-strategy game title will do the same in the global gaming market.

Clash of Gods is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) where massive armies controlled by players can engage in huge 3D battles. The game pits large armies, supported by their own gods, against each other, and results are determined by who has the better army, the best strategy, and the more powerful gods.

The original game was very different. The top-grossing Chinese game was called “Papa San Guo” (based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms), developed by Huorang Game. “We believe you have to give Triple-A Chinese games this kind of treatment or they won’t work in the West,” said James Zhang, chief executive of Spellgun. “The games have to feel natively Western. When you play this game, no part of it will feel like it came from China. What’s noticeably different about this is the massive 3D battles, which are embedded within a card battle game mechanic.”

Clash of Gods is clearly a Western title in its look and feel, with factions such as the Norse, Egyptians, and Greeks. But Spellgun is hoping to cash in on a big opportunity to try and grab a bite of the USD$30 billion mobile game market. The game is free to play, with in-app purchases.
