For the past two years or so, smart wearable devices are slowly getting into the public consciousness and the consumer electronic market. However, there are some people who do want to get into this craze, but don’t want to wear smartwatches that look like, well, smartwatches. They still want to stick to the classic, traditional watches, only smarter. A new Kickstarter project called BOLDR offers this alternative and calls their device a “clever watch.”

Calling it a “collision of classic style and modern technology”, the watch looks like your traditional watch but comes with a whole lot of other features that are more common to the smartwatches we’ve gotten used to. Beneath the sleek analog dial that comes with most stylish devices, they have used “cutting-edge wearable and assistive technology.” Through Bluetooth connection to your smartphone, the “clever watch” can serve as a pedometer for when you’re running, walking, or working out. Just set your goals through the accompanying app and it will show you the percentage of what you’ve already accomplished.

The Voyage may not look like it, but it also gives you notifications through an embedded LED and a built-in vibration motor. You can choose which apps you want to receive notifications from, like SMS, emails, calendar, etc. It also has a feature that alerts you whenever you or your device gets far from your connected smartphone. You can use the app as well to set the distance threshold. You can also use the device as a remote camera with its shutter function so it won’t look too obvious that you’re taking selfies or groufies.

The Voyage is powered by a replaceable battery that can last up to 6 months even with continuous use, so no need for any kind of charging for this one. The campaign has already more than reached its $30,000 goal but you still have 15 days to go if you want to support it and be among the first to have one. You just need to pledge $169 and you get the Early Bird product and your choice from among the 6 different colors.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.
