There have been gadgets certified by the Bluetooth SIG and the Wi-Fi Alliance that didn’t even see the light of day, but we’re hoping that this possible new portable gaming device from NVIDIA will be the SHIELD 2 gaming portable. There is very little information on these to certifications, but we can only hope that a new NVIDIA portable gaming handheld is on the way.

The SHIELD Portable predated the SHIELD Tablet and the newly announced SHIELD set-top gaming box, and was the apple of everybody’s eye at CES 2013. And why not? It was basically a handheld device that looked like a gaming console controller with a dedicated screen. It screamed personal portable gaming that should be powerful because, hey, it was from NVIDIA.

Move to 2015, and the SHIELD Portable is not quite the gaming hit NVIDIA envisioned it to be. BUT, it has captured the imaginations of a niche market in gaming that allowed NVIDIA to put out better “SHIELD” branded devices in the SHIELD Tablet and the gaming set-top box. Would gamers and SHIELD portable owners be happy if NVIDIA released a SHIELD 2 Portable. Oh you bet.

From the certifications, the only data we can glean is that it will of course come with both wireless standards as a mobile device, and that it will possibly launch with the new set-top box that is scheduled to arrive in May. And oh yeah, it will be running Android Lollipop – its predecessor is still on Android 4.4 Kitkat as of the moment.
