Yesterday, we said that BlackBerry is expected to release the Android Marshmallow update for the Priv next month. Owners of the Android-powered BlackBerry phone have been anticipating for it and the demo video leaked was the first hint that it’s coming soon. The company has been faithful to release monthly software updates but it’s taking them some time to roll out the next Android version.

We know that the Marshmallow is currently being tested and finally, BlackBerry has officially announced the beta program for the next Android platform. Priv owners can now sign up at the Beta Zone and help in testing the Android 6.0 version on their devices.

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow has got some great new features for the BlackBerry smartphone. There’s Now On Tap, Doze Mode, App Standby, Streamlined settings, Auto backup for apps, system settings backup, and more security updates. The ‘Now On Tap’ understands your words and then automatically searches relevant information and cards. The ‘Doze mode’ offers longer battery life while the ‘App Standby’ limits the battery usage of apps rarely used.

Meanwhile, the ‘Streamlined settings’ lets you manage apps in one location while ‘Auto backup for apps’ allows the user to back up apps and data. The ‘System settings backup’ lets you back up settings like do not disturb, accessibility, and sync settings.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the BlackBerry Priv will be received over-the-air. Participants of the beta program can submit feedback and bug reports using a bug reporting app included in the beta build. The Beta program will last from four to about eight weeks. Only those who bought units from ShopBlackBerry, Amazon, and Carphone Warehouse will be accepted immediately. Others can still apply but they will have to wait. Once you get into the program, download the software and install. Make sure you enable the background diagnostic reporting on your phone.

Not all applicants will be chosen for the beta program because of the limited space. You may be placed in the waitlist so don’t be frustrated is you don’t receive an invitation. Testing will start next week but registration will formally open the following week.
