Android Pay is really going all out this year, adding more supported devices, expanding to other countries like the UK and soon Australia and Singapore, and adding more supported banks as well. At the ongoing Google I/O 2016 conference, Bank of America announced that their cardless ATM technology can now support the Android Pay platform. They will also be rolling out the system starting this month to around 5,000 ATMs by the end of the year.

They are actually the first major bank in the US to do a massive expansion of the cardless ATM system, allowing users to make transactions and access their accounts at the automated machines, even without using their cards. As long as they have a supported mobile device with near-field communications capabilities, then they’re good to go. They have previously rolled it out to selected machines in the Boston, Charlotte, New York City, San Francisco and Silicon Valley area.

Through the Android Pay app, when customers go to an ATM machine that has the contactless symbol, all they need to do is open their digital wallet and then choose Bank of America in the options. They will then need to hold their device over the contactless card reader so that the ATM will be activated. They will then be able to use it as a regular ATM, entering their PIN, checking their balance, withdrawing cash, etc.

The initial rollout starting this month will be to around 2,400 ATMs, including most of those in the San Francisco Bay and Silicon Valley areas. Since the bank says that 20 million of its customers are using the bank’s mobile app already, they are confident that a lot of them will also transition to using Android Pay and the cardless transactions at their ATMs.
