AT&T seems to be a company that likes to lock down their Android handsets. This may be why many AT&T customers haven’t adopted Android yet. By locking down their devices, we are unable to download applications from third-party developers, or locations. The only thing you can do is download applications from the Android Market.

Why locking down Android Handset really a big deal? Well, Android handsets allow you to choose whether you want to download tons of applications from the Android Market (officially) or from unknown sources. This gives you freedom on what you can get inside your fabulous Android phone. However, it is only works if is not lock down. Well, AT&T has their own say in this matter.

“AT&T selected Android Market as the exclusive source for applications because it forces developers to be accountable for the apps they submit. If the Android community has issues with an app, the app can be flagged and removed. This minimizes the risk of malicious apps harming customers and provides more protection to the customer’s private data stored on the phone.”
