Oh joyous day, we’d hoped this sort of functionality would be coming soon – and like any great innovation, it was already built in to the phone, just waiting for some intrepid developer to uncover it. This is the key to getting the ATRIX 4G’s Webtop app working via any HDMI capable screen, simply by removing the Device ID check from the Webtop Launcher in PortalApp.apk and making the DockProvider/DockService show Webtop as an option whenever your ATRIX 4G is connected via HDMI! This lovely functionality is brought to you by none other than “Fenny,” a smooth dev from over XDA way. Check below for the interactions.
The first thing you’ll need to do, and we remind you of course that all of this is at your own risk, is to Root and Deodex your phone. To do that, head over to designgears’ guide of guides. After that, you’ll need to have ADB set up and plop the following code in after you’ve downloaded the necessary files which are only available via XDA, below the code:
adb push DockProvider.apk /mnt/sdcard/
adb push DockService.apk /mnt/sdcard/
adb push PortalApp.apk /mnt/sdcard/
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/DockProvider.apk /system/app
cp /mnt/sdcard/DockService.apk /system/app
cp /mnt/sdcard/PortalApp.apk /system/app
You can find the files needed to execute this process over at the original XDA thread. There you can also find the code needed to clear your Dalvik Cache should you have any troubles. Once you’ve done this fabulous set of actions, let us know how it’s working! If it’s NOT working, be sure to report to Fenny so additional bugs can be debugged.
Also, what’s your opinion – should this functionality have been built in to the ATRIX 4G in the first place? If you’ve got the HD dock, do you enjoy it, or do you think it’ve been more convenient to simply be able to connect via HDMI? We’re of the opinion that the dock is nice to have since it does hold the phone upright, but to each his own – and the Laptop Dock should go without saying.
