It’s not just in the US where Android devices are out-selling Apple’s iPhone. New research by Intelligent Environments, a digital banking provider, suggests that Android handsets in the UK are more popular than the iPhone, with 28-percent of the people they surveyed having a device running Google’s OS.

That’s compared to 26-percent with an iPhone, and 14-percent with a BlackBerry. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, given Google is currently keeping its more advanced mapping features to itself, navigation and route planning is the most common application Android UK device owners take advantage of.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the iPhone is just one device, of course, versus multiple OEMs offering handsets running Android. Still, unlike in the US, in the UK the iPhone is currently offered across all of the major carriers, rather than being limited to one network.

  1. I’m all for Android and stuff, but I hate headlines like this one. I don’t think you can really compare between the two OS, considering the fact that iOS is just running on Apple’s iPhone, while Android is running on almost every other smartphone.

    • You really can…..
Its a decision between Google and Apple.
Doesn’t matter if apple is running 10000000000000000000000000000 phones.

      • Actually it really would. More phones more choices of keyboard/no keyboard, HDMI/no HDMI etc. etc.

    • Apple produces a line of products and one of those lines of products is a line of phones. Nokia produces a line of products and one of those lines of products is phones. . . etc.

Stop blaming others for how Apple chooses to manufacture & design their products. Just because Apple believes “one device fits all” doesn’t mean the rest of the world must follow that stupid idea.

Apple’s iOS is on several product lines now. Android has only been on smartphones till the Xoom came out and now some PMPs have been released. So, we should see some real interesting numbers by the end of 2011 for Android Vs all iOS lines.

Nonetheless, Android is giving the iPhone a beat-down across the world. Just like Apple wants to crow about “ipad-like tablet” market share. Android has every right to crow about smartphone OS market share.
