Amazon may have silently removed Fire tablet encryption for Fire OS 5 but it certainly didn’t receive a silent reaction from the mobile industry. Only a few days after websites noted this move by the top e-commerce company, Amazon backtracked its decision and has announced that the full data encryption option will be back soon. This is despite the explanation that Amazon servers are still secure.
The Fire tablet platform is still said to be secure but Amazon is bringing back the encryption option for the sake of others who want it. In a reply to SlashGear, Amazon said, “We will return the option for full disk encryption with a Fire OS update coming this spring.” We’re not sure why we have to wait some more but at least we know the option will be available again.
Amazon said there wasn’t much any interest by the customers and that only a few people use it so the devs decided to delete the option. Its removal should be a safe move but with the recent issue involving Apple and the FBI, people want to stay on the safe side all the time.
As expected from Amazon, the company didn’t even disclose how many users actually activated the encryption before. I guess it doesn’t matter now because that option will be restored. But seriously, who cares about this Fire OS tablet encryption? Raise your hands and stand up.
