Back during January when CES was in full swing, one of the stranger Android products we ran across was the Parrot Asteroid Android-powered car stereo. We had some of the details back in January, but the real things we wanted to know like when it would land and how much it would cost were a mystery until now. Parrot has now announced the pricing and the launch date for the Asteroid.

The car stereo will land in October and will have a MSRP of $349. I thought that the Asteroid might cost more than that, so the MSRP is not bad for those interested in what the radio has to offer. One of the biggest downsides to me is the fact that the Asteroid is a single DIN unit. Every newer car I have been in uses a double DIN radio.

Parrot also announced that when the Asteroid hits the market it will have six apps to go along with it including Maps, Roadtrip, Wikango, Weather, TextFriendly, and TuneIn apps. These apps are for music and other services. The Asteroid connects to the internet via WiFi from your phone, a hotspot, or a USB dongle. The LCD on the radio is 3.2-inches and the Asteroid supports FM radio and lots more.

THANK YOU! Same feeling here, which is easily the #1 reason I will not be purchasing their initial product. I don’t want to replace my factory unit with something that doesn’t “look nice” (and placing a single DIN unit in a double DIN unit with an adapter never looks attractive at all).

Give me a double DIN unit with motorized touchscreen (one that would be conveniently big enough to be worth video playback too) and I’m sold. 🙂
