Developer Florent Revest has an interesting new project – it’s called AsteroidOS, and it is an open source, Linux-based operating system designed as an alternative OS for some Android Wear smartwatches. AsteroidOS boasts of better control over privacy, and the freedom to run open source software. Revest has just announced an alpha build of the OS is now available for download.
You might not want to ditch Android Wear for AsteroidOS, but in addition to open source freedom, there are also older generation smartwatches that are no longer being updated by their manufacturers. AsteroidOS might just be for older smartwatches what custom ROMs are for older smartphones – that is, a new lease on life.
This build available for download is clearly an initial alpha build – that is, there will be some things that won’t work. AsteroidOS works (after a fashion) on the LG G Watch, LG G Watch Urbane, Asus Zenwatch 2, and Sony Smartwatch 3. The big bug is that Bluetooth does not work on any device except the original LG G Watch.
This build is clearly for developers to test out, but the demo video above does show some nice touches aesthetically. The project has a lot of potential, if only to give your smartwatch better software to run on.
