We’re getting more and more information about the features that will make it to Android N’s final release – although we’re still waiting for a name, of course. One of the main highlights that make us happy about Android N is the multi-window mode, but here’s news that will put a damper on our excitement: freeform multi-window mode will not show up on any of the official builds. Of course, that means the feature will not show up on any of the Nexus devices as well.
Allow us to clarify – Android N is indeed introducing multi-window support, but only in a limited way. This means you can enable a split-screen option that will put apps side-by-side, so you can see more apps on the screen at one time. But freeform multi-window is being able to drag windows around, resize them like you would on a PC. Sadly, that feature will not be official.
That is not to say you can’t enable the feature, though. The feature will be there, but it won’t be enabled, so it will take a bit of work to do it yourself. Manufacturers will also be able to enable the feature on future phones if they wish to, but Google is specifically not doing that for their Nexus devices and on official stock builds of Android N.
