Google I/O is just around the corner so don’t be surprised if you hear early announcements or see a barrage of leaks and rumors. One of the many big ideas the industry is expecting is an Android VR. It’s not a new virtual reality platform but rather a standalone head gear that can rival the likes of Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or LG 360 VR. We’re still taking this with a grain of salt but there is a high probability that Google will roll out one.
It could be the Android VR or maybe (just a guess) a Nexus VR. We know that Android N is slowly getting its settings ready for VR. The idea isn’t far-fetched and even tech journalist Peter Rojas said in a tweet that “Android VR will definitely be announced next week, and from what I’ve heard will be less powerful than the Vive or Rift” and that “Android VR will be a standalone headset”. This isn’t the first time Rojas mentioned something related to this. In February, he said in a report that the VR headset will be “less powerful than the Vive or Rift” without disclosing any more details.
A standalone VR headset is welcome. Google may already have the Cardboard but it doesn’t offer optimum performance when it comes to virtual reality experience. A new Android VR can be a game-changer. That is, if and when Google will put a reasonable price tag. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
