Remember the Revolv home automation setup? Nest bought the startup and then Nest was later on acquired by Google. The smart home hub will soon meet its end as Alphabet, the parent company of Google, wants to focus on Nest instead. Revolv was one of the first Internet-of-Things (IoT) services that connect devices with one another via the Internet. Nest allowed Revolv to be used but unfortunately, it will cut it off by May 15.
Revolv was probably one of our first experiences to centralize control of devices using a single app. A physical box-shaped device works like a router that offers support for different technologies and bands. When it first acquired Revolv, Nest told owners service would continue. However, there wasn’t much any change or improvement because previous Revolv developers started to work on the Nest platform. The Nest smart thermostat was launched soon by Google.
Unfortunately, some things must come to an end. Revolv will cease to exist beginning May 15. The app and the Revolv hub will be disabled by Nest which obviously means support will no longer be provided. Even user data will be deleted so everything will be no more, nada, zero, zilch when talking about the Hub.
We’re not surprised about this move. Any acquisition may lead to the possibility of either being fully absorbed and integrated or totally dissolved. The Hub business is already lucky to be given a change to survive by Nest and Google. The Hub devices are already out of warranty anyway so there shouldn’t be any problem. And besides, there are far more advanced and smart technologies available these days that would be better replacements for the Hub.
