So when was the last time you saw an honest to goodness AOKP custom ROM? You would have to go back to Jelly Bean and Kitkat for that, which is a ways back now in technology time. But there are signs of life from the AOKP team, with their latest blog post full of the usual “kang-ness” that we’ve grown to expect from them.
AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project, a wordplay on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and, err… “kang”. They themselves have been pretty upfront about their lack of activity last year, but there seems to be some new blood coming into the team to help revive AOKP as one of the better custom ROMs out there.
As per the post, they are working on Android 6.0.1 as their source material, and getting from CM13 for features. Along the way, we’re told to expect more unicorn magic and some AOKP-only features, but for now they will be getting most of the features from CM.
The post mentioned some Nexus phones will be first on AOKP’s list – the Nexus 5X (bullhead), the Nexus 4 (mako), the Nexus 5 (hammerhead), the Moto G (falcon), and the OnePlus 2. After some tweaks, we might see builds for the OnePlus One (bacon), the OPPO Find 7, Android One devices, and the Moto E (condor). It’s not going to be long now, so hold on to your unicorns.
