Ok, caveat at the beginning – these are just rumors. A source from China’s Weibo social media network has just said that we might not be seeing any devices carrying Qualcomm’s upcoming new chipset, the Snapdragon 820, in the first quarter of the year except probably the Samsung Galaxy S7 – as Samsung may have exclusivity rights to the new chipset.
So not, it won’t be the Xiaomi Mi5, or any other device for that matter, if the rumors hold true. There might be some substance to it, since it was in Samsung’s foundries – using the Korean gadget giants’ own 14nm FinFET process – that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is being manufactured. Part of the partnership deal maybe that Samsung gets exclusivity until April 2016.
It was heavily reported that Samsung has been the first manufacturer to test the Snapdragon 820 in its labs, this to make sure that the overheating issues that plagued the initial Snapdragon 810 batches will not make a comeback.
This might be a good thing for Samsung, but it might have a general effect of slowing down the premium gadget market in 2016, with the rest of the brands and manufacturers having to wait until April or later to launch their flagship devices. What do you guys think?
